Omg how late are these, I’m terrible I know. I might actually be one of the worst painters on the face of the world. I really do like these, I like the sculpts but I boxed myself into a corner with the armor. The red and yellow color scheme looks ace but it was so painful to execute. Anyone who paints or knows me personally know I hate yellow as its a terrible to work with, and the red just made it worse. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy with it but I’d been putting this off for about a month. They were sat on my desk about 85% finished for far too long (weeks). Still I’ve got less then a month until I’m back at Uni (I’m very excited) and I promised myself I’d get Silver Tower finished before I got back so, I’ve gotten of my fat backside and I’ve kicked myself into gear.

I was kinda going for some sort of divided allegiance for the models, I wanted them to come across as if they were dedicated to some kinda of order of power, worshiping Tzeentch and Khorne equally, this was done to break up the rest of the boxset, as all the enemies are all very much Tzeentch worshipers and very much blue from head to toe. I’m going to be working on the cultists and the barbarian next, since they collectively are made up of about 70% flesh they should be easy enough to paint. I’m not going to say they will be done much quicker then the rest as Its a promise I’ve made before in the past but I’m aiming to have them done ASAP.


BattleReport – Age of Sigmar, Thunder and Blood.


My long time friend and fellow geek had just lucked into a small collection of age of sigmar models, we played 40k together after I’d gotten them into it when I started studying at his University and he picked up himself some Necrons. Their flat mates had all started to move out of his accommodation and one of them basically gifted them some models they’d given up with, in exchange for a couple small favours. I figured there was no point for us both having the Khorne side of the AoS starter set and I was pretty keen to get another friend to play Age of Sigmar with, so I decided to let them have my Khorne models to buff up his collection. I was finding it hard to decided whether to play the Stormcast or the Bloodbound anyway, so honestly the whole exchange was a blessing twofold.


Their army was now larger then mine which was a little frustrating and I knew I’d have to get some Judicators to buff up my side to 1000pts for next time. Still we were playing matched and a couple of their units would sit this one out. Neither of us had much experience with AoS, this obviously being their first game and this being only my second (and first with the stromcasts!) but honestly that’s what makes AoS so good, its so simple and easy to get into that this really didn’t turn out to be a problem.


The game was set, we decided to just make our own simple objectives up, the three glass tokens were objectives which any model could control, worth 3 victory points a piece, and the slaying of the enemy warlord was worth the same. The first turn involved mainly all units moving up the board, with myself having priority. It would be my first… and last time I’d act first for the rest of the game.


At the start of the second round the Lord-Relictor and Reributors found themselves in the charging range of the Khorgorath due to my opponents generals ability and he used all of their attacks to try and kill the Relictor taking three of his five wounds, my Relictor tried to heal himself with healing storm but failed, but after both rounds of combat the four Stromcasts were able to bring down the beast to its final two wounds. On the opposite flank Prosecutors fell back baiting the Bloodwarriors, throwing of a round of missile damage with their celestial hammers, inflicting  3 wounds, all of which were failed.


The start of the third turn began with the Khorne declaring a series of charges which all failed, which was met with a series of laughter on my behalf, which was cut short when at the start of my turn my Lord Celestant failed a charge from 3″ away. My Liberators charged his Aspiring Deathbringer and they began to clash over the middle objective, scoring a whopping zero wound, then the Deathbringer did exactly same. Prosecutors took more pot shots at the Bloodwarriors inflicting four wounds, the Bloodwarriors failed ALL of them again, meaning they had failed seven saves on a four plus in a row, unlucky!


In the centre of the board at the start of the 4th turn, the Khorne opened up the portal of skulls in an effort to turn back the loosing combats, however with the Reributors having slayed the Khorgorath they were able to join the central scrum with my second unit of Liberators and the Bloodreavers . The large number of attacks hit the bulk of the Reributors and did not fault them (they inflicted two wounds which wasn’t enough to finish of a single member and in retaliation the two units of stormcasts reduced the reavers to just a champion and a standard). The Aspiring Deathbringer had worse luck, my Liberators scored three wounds in their combat phase, and as my opponent rolled his dice I declared “you’ll be find unless you fail all three”, it goes without saying (especially considering the guys luck thus far!) what happened next and with that the far right flank had crumbled. However far to the left, what was left off the Khorne forces slaughtered the Prosecutors and moved themselves in a position to attack my General, as we entered the final turn the Might Lord of Khorne declared that if he was too die this day he was taking the  Lord Celestant down with him.


With a mighty roar the  Lord Celestant’s Dracoth breathed forth a bout of flame at the oncoming Khorne forces, but it would take more then flame to stomp the forces of Chaos from entering combat, with earth shattering screams the two generals clashed in the centre of the battlefield, the Mighty Lord of Khorne bringing his reality tearing axe of Khorne high into the sky and…. fumbled all of his attacks and is destroyed in a single round of combat by the Celesant and his Dracoth…

Well that was a bit of a one sided game but with all things considered it was bound to happen when it was their first try at a brand new system. Still I think it was a-lot to do with the dice Gods, I can’t wait till I can buff up my force to get 1000pt to match their army and we can have a rematch now that they have had a chance to familiarise themselves the rules (and the power of the Reributors! these guys are expensive, but they do crazy amounts of damage in combat). Age of Sigmar is a really fun little game, It’s nice to play something that’s more focused on fun. I really do need to get my stormcasts painted up. They would probably be the first thing on my list after (IF I EVER) finish WarhammerQuest. Next will be the Tzaangors who I’m just applying the final details too.

Fyreslayer Doomseeker

My apologizes for the late posting of this, but frankly I think hes worth it. I’m not really a fan of the Fyrers, I mean I like a muscle bound ginger dwarf in very little clothing as much as the next man. But I’d never collect an army of them. Still this guy is great and I’m glad Warhammer Quest gave me an excuse to paint one. The model itself is a drastic improvement on the old world “Slayers” who used to resemble bears with legs and arms sticking out. I absolutely love all the little details on this guy and he genuinely looks hard as nails. I have a friend who loves dwarfs so I’d imaged this is the hero he will be playing as. As far as commentary goes I’m the most happy with his hair and beard, and least happy with how the runes branded into his flesh came out. Keep your eyes peeled as my Tzaangors are about 80% completed at time of posting so expect them on here very soon!

Scratch Built Hobbit Milita. WIP


There is something wrong with GW. Well we all know there is alot wrong with games workshop, but specifcally I’m referring to is their habbit of making cheap horde armies in Middle Earth Battle Strategy game in small metal/resin blister packs. This practice killed the game pretty much before it was made into a pesudo specialist system under forgeworld. This nasty habbit applies to the Shire faction, their core units are (unsurprisingly) quite meek and thus cheap. Nobody wants to spend a premium for a bunch of models that makes up an incredibly small number of in game points, and as much as metal (or resin when it isn’t bubble ridden finecast) yields greater detail it’s a pain to deal with in large numbers, chiefly due to weight and paint chipping. This was the dialogue I was having with myself when my partner expressed an interest in playing Lord of the Rings with me (which is my favourite wargaming system, due it’s focus on more cinematic game play and rich preexisting lore) but unfortunately they had their heart set on the Shire. Now I could have spent a small fortune buying the official models, but more then the cost or even the akward materials what put me off was how limited the sculpts would be. Which would be even more noticeable in what is typically considered a horde faction (your typical war faring hobbit cost as much as a goblin!)


The above photograph is what each of these custom hobbits are made from, I never really had done much green-work. Most conversions I’d done were kitbashing, however when I stumbled across 36 plastic fellowship hobbits ( 12 Frodo, Merry and Pippins) on eBay for a “reasonable” price I couldn’t help but take the chance. After all I don’t even understand how anybody would just randomly own this many of these hobbits and they are all from a £70ish OOP Lord of the Rings starter set, which obviously only contained one of each party member. I’m pretty happy with the results and I’m certain they will look alot better when they have been painted up. Should take the eyes away from my questionable greenstuff modelling!

Daemons of Tzeentch


These little bad boys are way overdue, honestly, I’m my own worst enemy. You would assume finishing my first year of studying for my History Degree would mean I’d have found more room to paint. I’m determined to get a habit of this, like I have with exercise and my language study. The plan is that I have to paint a little EVERY day. Even if it’s just to do a single coat or colour, if it works this blog will be the tell…


Now I’m personally really happy with how the pink horrors came out. These were a pleasure to paint honestly, or at least the first one was. You really can’t appreciate how freaky these things are in grey…


The blue horrors I’m less happy with but they are smaller and my personal art style didn’t play well into the small muscles and such. I really do love the sculpts, the one with the single large eye and curling up warp energy really reminds me of something you’d seen in the original DOOM.


Maybe I’m a little old school but I’ve never heard of a brimstone horror before WarhammerQuest Silver Tower. They are cute little things, but oh my are they small. All things considered I’m really proud of how much ‘detail’ I was able to get on these little 🔥 imps. I was aiming for a fire that burns inside out with red at its core, as well as it burning in all directions with no point of origin. You know cause they are little daemons. I dont know, but I enjoyed myself and I think they look great.

Seriously getting excited now to finish off this box set so we can actually play it…. Gonna be two firsts for me. Playing WarhammerQuest and playing with completely painted miniatures. Considering I’ve been into this kind of thing for over a decade that’s a joke!




BattleReport – Super Dungeon Explore, Forgotten King


The game was a three hero match, taken straight from the Forgotten King box, all the Bosses and Spawn are the ones from that, the Old Growth and Bramble Knights with the Forgotten King in charge with Boris and the Trenth. River was using the Nether Assassin for some range attacks (their own miniature), Thunderviel Huntress for melee and mobility and the Tabbybrook Mage for some healing and offensive magic.


The first spawn was quickly dispatched, chiefly due to a large number of botched offensive attempts on my (the council’s) part. The Huntress quickly acquired  +1R offensive dice from a loot draw and the little damage I could inflict was quickly healed by the Freyjan mage. The hero’s were completely ignoring the sprout to my disappointment.  However, after the spawnpoint was destroyed, fortunes would swing when the mini-boss appeared in the dungeon.


The Trent would prove to give the hero’s a lot of trouble, he has high defensive stats coupled with ‘Tough’ and its ability to force hero’s to discard loot cards caused a war of attrition, it would take the hero’s a long time to whittle down the first mini-boss and at the cost of a lot of the loot they had managed to scrape together. Needless to say even if Trent had failed to kill the hero’s he had achieved a victory for the council, that was until he died and gave River, Chomp, which in my opinion is the most powerful pet.

Incase you’re not too familiar with SDE, pets are a rare but pretty powerful treasure because they don’t take up your “one treasure per hero slot” and basically function like a small minion your hero gets, that they can bring back to life if it dies. Chomp has an AoE attack that deals fire at 2R dice, which lead to the Tabby’s pet pulling more weight than the Assassin was at this point. The second spawn point was dispatched in a third of the time of the first, however the council did have one last play to make in this tile before the last mini-boss would be called upon.

That will teach River to ignore my sprout! or at least it would have if he actually did anything, alas at this point the hero’s were well enough equipped to beat up the KingSprout without taking too much damage, my ploy of hiding the Turniphead (or should I say Carrotheads) just out of sight to heal up the little shop of horrors failed when Kelly got behind the massive Paranaplant and her crossbow saw an end to that plan.


To get off topic a little bit, Boris is a cool character, his fluff is interesting and I like how he plays, he’s not a bad mini-boss, and in the right game and situation he can completely TPK the hero’s. This was not one of these games. Poor Boris has high attack, lots of actions and low defence, River had equipped the Huntress in the very same vein, however the huntress had a pocket-healer, and the design of the second tile only sealed poor Boris’s fate, he was quickly dispatched after an honourable effort.

The last room and spawn had plenty of time to set up, and I had one last play to give the Forgotten King the biggest chance of killing the hero’s (and he was going to need it as River still had both princess coins), using my remaining minions to do as much damage as possible before forcing a spawn at the perfect time on my own terms to get my last set of models on the table, and trigger the boss battle in a single turn, sneaky but necessary if I wanted a chance to win. To make matters worse Boris had yielded another pet to the party! Admiral Fuzzybottom. The luck the party was having, you’re lucky to see a single pet in a full game of 5 hero’s!


The pieces were set, the Forgotten King spawned, he quickly used his teleportation ability and Hubris to execute a pincer attack and finish of a wounded Nether Stryder, finally, my first kill of the game. The Huntress too busy finishing off the remains of the Old Growth spawn and by the time she wasn’t, the King had utilised his ability to disappear again, with the Tabbybrook on her heel (hoof?) they proceeded to chase the Dungeon’s master with a freshly revived Nether Stryder. Again, the King ambushed the hero’s, this time killing the Freyjan mage. The last princes coin was spent, and if I could kill the healer again I might have had a chance here.


In the end the hero’s won. Which is a good thing really, as much you should never let your hero’s win. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m a regular Dungeon master but I enjoy the experience rather than focusing on winning and losing, it was a close one, at timeout bringing a Grobbit back onto the board was a big help, but in the end the Hero’s party had skilfully chosen its loot to enable maximum status effect and being staggered by my inability to remove the princess coins before the final match means I lost my momentum and the Forgotten King would remain forgotten, cast to the ground dishonoured and in flames.


In conclusion I really did enjoy this game, it had its ups and downs for both of us and that’s what you really need for a game like this. I don’t think Kelly will see much use outside of her native intention of being a mini-boss as River disliked her as a Hero and felt that she failed to drag her weight. Still, any game when you get TWO PETS is a good game in even my books, and I was on the receiving end of it! To think, I have been playing this game for so long, and this will be one of if not the last session of the game I will play, at least in this form, as second edition is due to come out this year (even if forgotten king was the second edition they released but I’m not going to argue!). A Kickstarter that I was part of and very excited to receive. I really need to get myself motivated with painting and I hope this little diversion makes up for that. The Daemon will be uploaded in the week and hey maybe I will upload another post like this again some time!

Throw Back Thursday: Nyan Nyan

Now I’m going to be doing this as well since my ability to paint consistently could do with some work. I am working on the Daemons from the silver tower like I said I would, I promise. They are about 55% done? Well I digress, this will no be a consistent thing, maybe once every month or so is what I’m expecting. Think of it as a tag to represent stuff I painted BEFORE making this blog, as everything I catalogue traditionally has been made since it’s a chronicle of my current painting. So disclaimer obviously by that nature, some stuff may not be as good e.c.t. Obviously, that goes without saying but ya-know.

Enough with the paperwork, The Nyan Nyan is a very special piece for me. I’ve been into SDE for a long time. Like the pre-base game, (id love to get my hands on some of the old metal Kobolds, wouldn’t open them, just keep them in the blisters). I can remember when this figure was a convention exclusive, or at least very difficult to obtain in the UK, I can remember them selling for £35+ on Ebay when I finally found one for around retail I’d wanted the box for nearly a year. The figure is lovely and the paint job is supposed to be Parter (who I’m still with fyi) and that was some two plus years ago. At least the skin tone and hair, I always remember 1st edition versions ‘Nine-Lives’ ability allowed the Hero to cheat Death on a (R)2★+, and if they cheated death once, the next time you died you just tried again and again. Now that’s not AS overpowered as it sounds, it’s pretty much a 1/3 chance of failure. But it was too strong and was nerfed from forgotten king onwards, with the ability working pretty much the same but being a ‘one use only’ deal. I like most things “Neko” so the idea of the Freyjan race appeals to me, if not new or original it fits the theme of the game perfectly, I really should get around to painting the Freyjan mage I purchased last year for a normal blog post….

Excelsior Warpriest & His trusty Gryph-hound

This was the hardest member of the Party so far, and if it wasn’t for the gryph-hound turning out in a way that I liked I might not have made it through this model. Honestly the lightning bolts I think is what gave me the real trouble and I’m far from happy with it, I’d just gotten to the stage where I could do no more and was just making it worse. Still, I always loved the old Empire warrior priest. I remember when Warhammer Online came out and there was an awesome advert with one in it that made me really want to play Warhammer or the MMORPG. Alas, I was twelve and could afford neither. In all seriousness, this guy isn’t really the same thing – but he basically is the AoS equivalent and any points he lost to the old classic is made up for by his pet GRYPHHOUND (did I mention he has a dog that’s half bird and it’s awesome?). I know my partner will be playing as this fella (he has a pet, that’s kinda how they do) and I hope they realise how much of a @£%~# it was to paint. So much so that at this time I’m working on the Daemons instead, splitting the Heros into two groups. I need a break from them….


This fellow is interesting, I remember this model being the first Stormcast I ever saw and I, like a few hated him and the idea of the ‘ground marines’. In-fact, I continued to hold that opinion for longer then Id care to admit, I think its the fact that they lack a subtle sense of humanity that the Empire characters from the old world possessed. Still having gotten my hands on this model, I actually really enjoyed painting , I was adamant that I wouldn’t do the standard gold and blue, but again that proved not to be the case. In fact the ‘questor’ was a pleasure to paint, and he’s going to look grand on the tabletop. I really do think the stormcasts serve an important purpose for Age of Sigmar from a technical standpoint. I appreciate a-lot of people disliked the idea of “Spaze marinz in fantasy” but what Stormcast really represent is a faction that is easy to paint (due to small model size and simple big details) and easy to play. This bringing’s in the younger and more casual market that I know the neck-beards fear more then the opposite sex, but it sells and it makes the hobby grown. Besides after giving the Stormcasts a chance, I even enjoyed some of the fluff, I was personally put off by them being Immortal, “Whats the point” I asked “If my dudes die, he just comes back. There is no stakes involved”, The point, is that each time a Stormcast is ‘reforged’ they lose a little more of themselves, each time. Stormcasts fear being killed because one-day they will be reforged and have lost so much of themselves, leaving nothing but a automaton in gold plate, no personality, or trace of their past selves. It very subtle, and cleaver when you think about it, even a dying man can take refuge in the idea that his soul will go on, but its the very soul that the Stormcast risks. Anyway enough philosophy and small talk, here is the painted Stormcast Knight-Questor


Mistweaver Saih

So my first update, and hopefully not the last. This week i’m showing of my Mistweaver, shes and Elven mage (I refused to word the term Aelf or any-other greed fuelled copy-write cash grab made by GW in the AoS reboot)  that I honestly didn’t like much based off what i’d seen online. However having physical hold of the miniature and having time spent painting it, shes grown into one of my favourites from the set. I love the dynamics of the sculpt. She’s got plenty going on without becoming too “busy” like a-lot of Games Workshops miniatures now-a-days. Still she was quit difficult to paint but am reasonably happy with the result.                                                                                                                                     It will be interesting in WarhammerQuest Silver Tower, you don’t need a ‘Game Master’, its enemies actions are rolled from charts and the dungeons are random. This is great for someone like me as i’m ALWAYS the GM/DM. A position I love, it suits me well, in-fact in the rare instances I’ve found myself not the Games Master in a pen-and-paper RPG, I’ve found my self missing my traditional role. Still I do look forward to actually being able to play as a Hero in a miniature based dungeon crawler such as WarhammerQuest, and I think I’m most so certainly going to be playing as this character, I specifically like how the focus is less on her staff and more on her rather intimidating Elven short blade the mage brandishes with a air of confidence most nontraditional of the token “magic” user in any game or setting like this….
